Shank Chow Dog Food

This spot was for a fictional dog food product that we produced several years ago for fun. We shot on a DSR-250, which really gave us some beautiful shots. I wrote, directed and edited this spot. (I also made the product label, which was more fun than you can imagine given the product.)

One of the most difficult parts of this commercial, which we knew going in, was working with an animal. The gentlemen seen here, who we used as talent, was a horse trainer that had never been in front of the camera. He had a well trained dog and since we needed a trained dog, more than a trained actor, it fit the bill that day. And with less takes than you’d imagine, working with an animal and an untrained actor, we finished our day on time.

As an aside, I’m always amused when people watch the dog food pour out of the can, like we doctored it to make it gross. Yea, it’s really what Alpo looks like …strangely dogs seem to like it.

Poor fellas’.
